Day 8: Journey to Ongi Monastery

This little mountainous region runs alongside the Ongiin Gol, Mongolia's tenth-longest river, which is 435 kilometers long overall. After a lengthy drive from Baynzag, this shrine is a nice place to stop. About 18 kilometers from Saikhan Ovoo is the picturesque monastery of Ongiin Khiid on the Ongiriver. Founded in 1660 and consisting of two temple complexes on the north and south banks of the Ongi River, it was formerly one of Mongolia's biggest monasteries. Eleven temples and other administrative structures made up the older southern complex. Constructed in the 18th century, the northern complex included 17 temples, including one of the biggest in all of Mongolia. Four Buddhist universities were also located on the premises. Under Khorloogiin Choibalsan, the president and head of the Communist Party of Mongolia at the time, it was totally demolished in 1939. Many of the monks who survived were either imprisoned or compelled to enlist in the Communist-run army, while more than 200 monks were slaughtered. The river and the nearby hills are home to numerous ruins, including a big stupa. The decision to reconstruct the monastery was made in the 1990s. There are currently 13 monks residing at the monastery (2011).

Day 9: Journey to Kharkhorum& Erdenezuu Monastery

The Karakorum and Erdenezuu monasteries will be our next stop. Following a quick walk along the Ongi River, we will continue on to Kharkhorin (Karakorum), the capital of the old Mongolian empire in the 13th and 14th centuries. During the middle of the 13th century, Karakorum was a bustling city. In order to attract traders, dignitaries, and skilled laborers from all over Asia and even Europe, Chinggis Khan created a supply base here and his son Ogedei ordered the construction of a real capital. Before Kublai relocated the capital to Khanbalik (later known as Beijing), which still causes animosity among some Mongolians, the good times lasted for about 40 years. Following the relocation to Beijing and the Mongol empire's eventual fall, Karakorum was deserted and later destroyed in 1388 by resentful Manchurian soldiers. The massive monastery of ErdeneZuu, which was severely destroyed during the Stalinist purges, was constructed in the 16th century with the assistance of what was remained of Karakorum. The very uninteresting village of Kharkhorin, which was constructed by the Soviets, lies only a few kilometers from the ErdeneZuu monastery.
