An Overview of Tsaatan
The East and West Taiga regions are home to the Tsaatan population, with White Nuur village acting as a focal point. Driving or riding a horse to the taiga's edge and then continuing on foot to the Tsaatan camps are two ways to get to these places from Tsagaan Nuur village.West Taiga: About 20 kilometers to the rear of the Harmae valley, west of Tsagaan Nuur settlement, is the West Taiga, which may be reached by car or bicycle. Beyond this, the landscape changes to rocky slopes, steep, forested mountains, and inaccessible rivers. The West Taiga is only reachable on horseback, with the exception of a few camps along the valley's edge. There are around 20 Tsaatan households living in family groups in the camps, which are spaced 10–40 kilometers apart.East Taiga: The Eastern Taiga is located northeast of Tsagaan Nuur and may be reached by car or bicycle in around 30 km towards Hogruk. A local family runs a ferry that crosses the Shishged River. The frozen river permits movement in the winter, although the conditions can be dangerous. The East Taiga, which stretches along the border between Russia and Mongolia, has a variety of topography, including dense woods and steppe-taiga valleys. Most sites are only accessed by horse because of muddy roads during the warmer months, while others can be reached by car under mild mud conditions. The camp, which houses more than 18 Tsaatan homes arranged into family groupings, is 6–40 miles from Hogruk.
